David Cowan

Junior Fellow, 2018-2019
David Cowan
David is a second-year MTS student at HDS, where he is focused on the intersections of religion, economics, and politics.  As a Junior Fellow at SRC, David is studying historical and contemporary attitudes towards economic agents like lottery players, financial speculators, and money lenders.  The goal of this work is to see how the rhetoric around such agents, which are often portrayed negatively, can help illuminate broader conflicts and anxieties that contribute to shaping debates about the moral dimensions of the economy.

Prior to HDS, David studied religion and mathematics at Williams College; earned an MA in humanities from Chicago; completed a PhD in mathematics at Tufts University; and worked for twelve years in asset management, most recently serving as Head of Global Equity at Boston-based investment firm GMO.  He lives with his wife and two children in Carlisle, MA.
