Junior Fellow, 2018-2019
Jon-Paul Lapeña is a third-year Master of Divinity candidate at Harvard Divinity School where he focuses on New Testament texts and early Christian origins. Before coming to HDS, he studied religious studies and ancient history at San Diego State University. His current research interests center on health care and healing practices of the early Jesus movements, with particular attention on the directionality and flow of physiognomic attitudes toward physical and mental disability. As an SRC Junior Fellow, Jon-Paul will explore the healing story of the boy with a mute spirit in the Gospel of Mark (Mark 9:14-29) through a medical-anthropological lens to gain insight into healthcare practices within the author’s community. Outside of school, Jon-Paul spends his free time exploring New England with his dog and coercing friends into playing Settlers of Catan.
